Good-bye to Godzilla

One of my favorite Yankees, but retiring as a Ray. Where will he live? What will he do? They're breaking up that old gang of mine. Matsui=always a sure thing in left field and at the plate. Will miss you.

'Los to AL 'Stros

You wouldn't think a team would even give this strike-out king the time of day, yet Pain Ya is gonna make millions with another (sucker) team. I love the guy... just not at the plate. 'Bye again!

It's goin' down...

Don Mattingly taking Joe Torre's teachings to heart.... with a team full of superstars, the manager gets a lot of the credit for not that much work. Nice when owners have deep pockets.

Dodgers get Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto, added to Matt Kemp, Hanley Ramirez, Andre Ethier, and Shane Victorino, Juan Rivera, Juan Uribe, James Loney & Matt Treanor. Red Sox get new blood, a new lease on life, and extra money in the bank. Nice.

Doug Glanville on Rocket Roger

Guess I'll have to wait for the replay tomorrow, assuming the tropical storm hasn't knocked out the power. I'd tune in for his inning.

I am so over this guy....

Just send him back to the Cubs already. Oh wait, they don't want him either. He will PAIN YA.

Again...

Update 8/30:  Apparently management shares my frustration, as 1st base is now a job-sharing position. Finally.

Update 9/3: And Keppinger is fab at first...

Break my heart.  Bring it, Mo.

Hideki Matsui a Ray soon?

Apparently we need more boom on the bench. I think this is a great idea -- worked well with Damon. Matsui always a plus, if his knees are still there. What a great player!

Can you say 5-hit complete game shut-out? I love you, man!

Curtis Granderson... I'm going to Reggie-land!

Three, that's 3, homeruns in three, that's 3, at-bats. And after Shields & Price owned you to start the season. Awesome. Still love you man!

Zobie gets it done!

Ozzie Being Ozzie?

Here in S. Florida, the press conference is on ESPN, Telemundo, and Univision. People are standing outside the new Marlins Stadium watching the tv feed on the Jumbotron outside.

Yesterday, Dan LeBatard, a great (Cuban) sports journalist in Miami said how could Guillen not know that to Cubans, Castro is Hitler. It doesn't get any clearer than that.  And that's the level of contrition he needs to achieve. Right now, Dan is saying he thinks Ozzie is broken, very contrite, and for him, enough apology and punishment.

How about shutting out the Yanks for your 25th birthday, Jeremy?

Now that's what I call a season opener! Wowie wow wow wow!

A Grand Slam AND A Blown Save! All from a returning Ray... GO LOS!

And you know I have mixed feelings, NYC born & bred, childhood in the shadow of original Yankee Stadium, Grampa listening to games on the radio, Phillip, Bill, all my personal Yankee influences. So, yeah, I get confused, and sometimes don't care who wins when they play the Rays... it literally becomes a win-win situation for me.  But Friday, I heard the first third of the game in the car, on my way west to the Seder, but I was taping it at home, so I could see how it ended and .... heard Jeff DeForest tell the final score on the way home from the Seder... In fact, he said the Yankees were done for the year after this game, because if Mo can't close, you might as well hang 'em up. That's when I knew something extraordinary had happened.

Now, I was not that sad to see Los go to the Cubs. I was tired of liking him and his attitude and hating him every time he struck out, which was way too often IMHO. I loved Kotchman at 1st, trusted him to catch and hit and was sorry to lose him to the Indians. But to bring back The Whiffer? Talk about mixed feelings! By the time I wrote this, back in 2010, I was already calling him Pain Ya and wanting his salary to keep Crawford in town.

Here's my take. As Suzan mentioned on the radio, Carlos already had a great average against CC [Ed. No, he didn't -- he was 4 for 35.]. Second, he's been deliriously happy to be back with the Rays. Third, the bases were loaded. Fourth, he'd already hit 6 slams in his life. Fifth, it was opening day at the Trop & a new banner had been raised. Sixth, it was the first game of the season -- practically still Spring Training -- and neither pitcher was great. I just think the ball was there, meeting up with the bat and the adrenaline over the plate, fated, as a welcome back gesture.  I mean, when he left the Rays last year he was batting .129 fer cripes sake. I don't think Girardi made a bad move walking S-Rod before him (insofar as walking anyone ever intentionally is a bad move), because Sean is young & coming up, his dad's a minor league coach & Carlos can be expected to strike out, walk, or hit, usually in that order. (I'd read the Yanks investigated getting Carlos, but they already have a superior 1st baseman who hits.) But Joe was probably familiar with his stats & strengths, and went with the percentages. The adrenaline won.
As for that shot in the 9th, total amazement [Ed. he'd never had a hit off Rivera]. But when Girardi set that 5-man infield, I'm sure it was like a red flag to a bull to hit the ball over that Maginot Line. Which he did. Oh, and Pena didn't blow Mo's save, Zorilla did.

Going to update my Rays fantasy team now...

roster moves are a bitch when you're mirroring the team! Yikes. Sam, Uppie, Farnsie, what's a Vogt? Gets my vote! What an average. Picking him up now.

He's ba-a-a-a-ck!

An-dy! An-dy!
I'm not really surprised. If his retirement was more about Roger Clemens then about Andy Pettitte & family, I'm glad he got it sorted out. Let's see, what did happen to Roger Clemens?

Almost time...

Watched my first Rays game on tv today, on SunSports. Our other fox station seems to be in a fight with DirectTV and has only carried carried the satellite bubble onscreen for a couple of weeks. Whole team, plus managers, coaches & even owners had their heads shaved as part of a charity event for a children's cancer organization. Maddon's dye-job went painlessly, down to his white roots... said he'd be going for the Einstein look -- white and wild.

Many new names trying out, Pena still smiling on strike three, Sam Fuld so fast he beats his sharp infield bunts to first (eventually the Phillies stopped even trying to throw him out). Look at this awesome depth chart... 6 great starting pitchers! WOW!

What's with the dancing cat?

Apparently the Rays have a new cat-mascot. Photo & video here. Don't cats eat rays?

Tim Wakefield is retiring today...

I will not miss this guy's knuckleball.

And it looks like A.J. Burnett becomes a Pirate after all, which will make it easier to watch Yankee games.

Oh, and Manny is going to try to be Manny again in Oakland... Look at this from Yahoo Sports: "The A’s last week agreed to terms on a $36 million, four-year contract with highly sought after outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, a Cuban defector who has expressed interest in playing with Ramirez." Used to like the post-Sox Manny, but now he's old shoes.

Didn't see this coming...

Carlos Pena On The Rays Makes Sense . I've liked Casey K ever since he was on my first fantasy team. I'm sorry to see him leave the Rays... he recuperated there and found himself again. But this article makes it sound like 'Los may still have some swat in him. Only hope so. Those strike-3 at-bats were very depressing. Still, a great glove... and no "getting to know you" time needed, a big plus all around. Longo & Zobie already know how to throw to him. Okay, I'll go with that thought for a while.

Here's another approving opinion. Very much so.

Luke Scott??

Got a new DH.  Not thrilled about this, as I wanted Damon back AND I want Casey Kotchman back at 1B.  Old pal Home Run tells me this guy is a right-wing wing-nut, with an out-of-date belief system about our President. Doesn't seem to keep it to himself either.  I can't see this flying in Tampa.

Hip Hip Jorge!

You are one great player and I will miss you much. Almost wished you could be a Ray DH, but it's better this way, going out in pinstripes, forever blue & white. Thanks for playing great and being great, the go-to guy when you need a catcher with swat and Thurman Munson's dead.

Do the time warp again

I don't know why this is here, but it's a full game, with the actual Tommy John pitching with the incredible 1979 Yankees, before the crash. Geez, great to see these guys again. If only I had the full four hours...
